ARTIST BIO

HARRIS SMITH

Trained extensively in traditional  painting techniques and methods, Harris Smith has been a successful professional artist for over 30 years. With early qualifications and experience in secondary art education, the artist has studied Australian painting throughout life and using nature as an important  source has evolved a personal approach to subject matter which is both sensual and evocative .

Travelling extensively throughout Australia and being informed by the haunting beauty of the Australian landscape which often carries a lingering presence of the past, the artist has discovered a rich minefield of imagery - valleys, pastoral, coastal, towns and cities and the human interaction within these environments. Harris Smith responds to this imagery with  a sensitive treatment  of form, light and colour. With reference  to some aspects of early impressionists, the artist adds emphasis  through selective vision - enhancing and dramatising  to create a lyrical comment.

Harris Smith is the recipient of many prizes and awards including Camberwell, Brighton and Box Hill Rotary Art Exhibitions. The artist has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions nationally since 1978 and is represented in many private and some civic collections in Australia and overseas.
